* From 1959-1963, the 514th was known as the 1st FS (Phoenix), flying the A-1H Skyraiders from Bien Hoa. Formed in 1962 in Nha Trang, the 2nd FS (Tiger) became the 516th, flying T-28s then A-1Hs. The 518th was commissioned in 1964 with help from pilots from the 514th.
The 514th received the Presidential Unit Citation in February 1965 (Citation).
